Breakdown of de Gennes Scaling in (R1-xR'x)Ni2B2C Compounds

  • 1. Ames Laboratory and Department of Physics and Astronomy, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011 (United States)

Description

The superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) and Nacute eel temperatures (TN) have been determined for thirty (R1-xR'x)Ni2B2C single crystals. For Tc approx-gt TN, deviations from de Gennes scaling occur that are probably due to crystalline electric field effects. For Tc<TN there is a complete breakdown of de Gennes scaling. In (Dy1-xR'x)Ni2B2C, R'=Lu suppresses Tc an order of magnitude more rapidly than R'=Ho. This breakdown is inferred to arise from pair breaking by collective magnetic excitations. copyright 1996 The American Physical Society
