ANS in Reno: a look at the mature industry

Description

A summary on the fusion portion of the American Nuclear Society's 1986 annual meeting reports on the nuclear industry's setbacks in terms of public information and opinion and its successes at the St. Lucie plant and the status of the Seabrook plant. Pluses and minuses of the industry's research and development noted some disappointment in capacity factor improvements and problems in technology transfer. The accident at Chernobyl and striking a balance in quality assurance between costs and benefits, as well as standardization and the space nuclear power effort were among the topics discussed. The author reviews and summarizes major talks on the potentials and problems of the 1990s and new inspection and repair technology. 1 figure
