Mass loss from stars, whether by steady flow or sporadic ejection, has important consequences, both for the terminal state of stars and for the chemical evolution of galaxies. This review covers empirical determinations of mass loss rates for highly evolved cool stars, some of the mechanisms that have been proposed to drive the flow, and, some aspects of stellar evolution, such as the formation of planetary nebulae.
