Plasmatic levels of thyrocalcitonin in thyroid cancer

Description
Plasmatic levels of thyrocalcitonin were measured in 12 pacients with thyroid adenocarcinoma. Six had ganglionar metastases that did not concentrate radioiodine and in 3 of them pulmonar metastases were also presented. Plasmatic TCT was high in 5 pacients: 4 with papilary adenocarcinoma and one with medular adenocarcinoma, and one patient had normal values of TCT. With two exceptions, the patients who had measurable TCT levels also had metastases, while no evident signs of metastases were found in those whose TCT was undetectable. This relationship leads us to consider that measurable plasmatic TCT, after total thyroidectomy, can be an early sign of thyroid cancer metastases

O nivel plasmatico de tireocalcitonina foi determinado em 12 pacientes portadores de adenocarcinoma tireoideano, sendo que seis apresentavam metastases glanglionares nao iodocaptantes e, entre estes, 3 tinham tambem metastases pulmonares. Os niveis plasmaticos de TCT estavam elevados em 5 pacientes: 4 com adenocarcinoma papilifero e 1 medular e em um paciente a TCT estava normal. Todos os pacientes, com excecao de 2, cujas tireocalcitoninas eram dosaveis, apresentavam metastases. Por outro lado, nos pacientes cujos niveis de tireocalcitonina eram indosaveis nao encontramos sinais evidentes de metastases. Esta correlacao permite considerar a presenca em circulacao de tireocalcitonina, apos tireoidectomia total, como um sinal precoce de metastase de cancer de tireoideAdditional details
