Recent results of the prompt neutrino experiment at Fermilab and the charm hypothesis

  • 1. Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Firenze (Italy)

Description

The first results obtained from an experiment, specifically designed to study prompt neutrinos, are discussed. While the measured total charm production cross section (25 +-5 μb) and ratio of prompt muon antineutrino and muon neutrino fluxes (0.80 +- 0.19) are well in line with the hypothesis of D and antiD central production followed by their semileptonic decays, it is hard to find a simple explanation for the value of the prompt electron neutrino + electron antineutrino to muon neutrino + muon antineutrino flux ratio determined to be 0.64 +- 0.16
