Description
A new concept in core loading strategy termed Checkmate SM is presented for the improvement of In Core Fuel Management. Checkmate5M differs from traditional 'checkerboard' loaded cores by the arrangement of fresh fuel bundles in cruciform sub-patterns distributed within the core loading pattern. For a currently operating BWR, the improvements over a traditional checkerboard loading could translate in up to +10 EFPD in energy, or equivalently, +4.2% thermal margin and +0.1% shutdown margin, using the same batch size and bundle designs.
