Description
The spurious pulses which are present when a 4π-liquid scintillation detector is used for the absolute measurement of the radioactivity concentration of a 13 Ce solution have been quantitatively estimated. When a single 9635 QB photomultiplier tube is used, the spurious-pulse contribution under conditions of maximum counting efficiency and minimum channel dead time can be as high as 10%. When two photomultipliers are used in coincidence for viewing the counting cell, the spurious-pulse contribution is diminished by a factor of 10. A correction of -1.3% to the final result, with an estimated uncertainty of about 0.2% has been determined for the 13 Ce measurements
