Survey and evaluation of systems for torrent control: Methodological indications and applications to Simeto River Basin (Italy)

In this note some indications and methodological considerations on the survey of hydraulic systems meant for the control of torrents and on the evaluation of their efficiency are proposed. The main sources of information and the data needed for a full survey and characterization of the systems are identified. Then, some criteria for evaluating control systems efficiency (in particular check dams) which take into account conservation constraints, hydraulic efficiency and effects on the hydrographical network are suggested. The proposed methods were applied and adjusted for the case-study of the Sicilian Troina River basin
