Immobilization of uranium-rich high-level radioactive liquid waste in Synroc-FA

Description

Uranium-rich simulated high-level radioactive waste was incorporated in a synthetic mineral waste form (Synroc-FA). The simulated liquid waste and Synroc additives were chemically and thermally denitrated in a continuous operation using the White-shell roto-spray calciner. The calcined powder was subsequently consolidated using solid-state sintering at 12500C under a reducing atmosphere (N/sub 2/-5 vol% H/sub 2/). The sintered Synroc-FA waste form was characterized using X-ray diffractometry, electron probe microanalysis, and a modified MCC-1 leach test in Simulated Canadian Shield Saline Solution at 900C for 120 days
