Monte-Carlo simulations and microdosimetric study of cellular irradiations with low doses and low dose rates of 14 MeV neutrons

Description

This study is mainly concentrated on the effects of ionizing radiations on living cells. It contains three main parts: The first part describes the 'cell damage and cell repair' processes that occur during and after irradiations, as well as the results obtained by Dionet et al. in the 'Laboratoire de Physique Corpusculaire' which confirmed that human melanoma cells exhibit a certain hypersensitivity low doses and low dose rates irradiations with 14 MeV neutrons. A bibliographical research confirms that this same hypersensitivity was also observed by other authors. The second part describes the development of the GEANT4DNA toolkit which is a Monte-Carlo code that can follow protons (till energies as low as 100 eV) and electrons (till 15 eV) in liquid water. This code was used to describe recoil protons traces in the cell during 14 MeV neutrons irradiations. The third part describes the microdosimetric formalism and the theory of dual radiation action which was used in tour study to estimate the relative biological effect of 14 MeV neutrons on the melanoma cells. The obtained RBE was compared to the experimental results observed by Dionet et al. (author)

Abstract (French)

Cette these s'interesse aux effets des rayonnements ionisants sur les cellules vivantes. Le travail peut etre divise en 3 parties principales: La premiere partie resume les processus de dommage et de reparation cellulaire apres les irradiations, et les resultats obtenus par Dionet et al. au Laboratoire de Physique Corpusculaire notamment la mise en evidence de l'effet d'hypersensibilite de la lignee du melanome pour des irradiations a faibles doses et faibles debits de dose en neutrons de 14 MeV. La deuxieme partie decrit le developpement de la version officielle du code GEANT4DNA qui est un code Monte-Carlo capable de suivre les protons jusqu'a 100 eV et les electrons jusqu'a 15 eV dans l'eau. Ce code a ete utilise pour decrire d'une maniere detaillee les traces des particules qui traversent la cellule pendant les iradiations. La troisieme partie decrit les formalismes de la microdosimetrie et de la theorie 'Dual Radiation Action' qui ont ete utilises pour calculer l'efficacite biologique relative des neutrons de 14 MeV par rapports aux photons de 1 MeV pour la lignee irradiee au LPC, le melanome. L'EBR calcule est compare aux donnees experimentales disponibles. (auteur)
