Description
The aging of research reactors and public response to safety issues have led to a growing interest in Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) for the production of neutrons for R and D, medical and industrial applications. A cyclotron of 250 MeV accelerating 2.5 mA of protons into a Pb-Bi target surrounded by various moderating materials (no fissile materials involved) is proposed. A thermal neutron flux of about 2.5 E+14 n/cm2/sec can be obtained in a small volume by optimizing the moderation of spallation neutrons. This flux is comparable to the thermal flux obtainable in the flux trap of a 5 MW MTR type research reactor
