Description

A new method of investigation of emission lines of solar prominences, based on the use of triplet lines, is suggested. Main results of its application to the study of the magnesium green triplet lines and the Balmer lines H10, H11 and H12 in the quiescent prominence of October 15, 1960, are presented. It is established that the source function inside these lines is not constant, but changes, indicating thus to the difference between the profiles of emission and absorption coefficients under the conditions of the solar atmosphere. Total optical depth for the magnesium and hydrogen lines has been determined. For the hydrogen lines, the source function increases from the centre of the prominence to its periphery by 35 per cent
