Direct excitation of higher multipole resonances in heavy nuclei
Description
A review is given on recent giant resonance studies in heavy nuclei investigating higher multipole excitations. Three topics are discussed: the high lying giant octupole resonance, higher multipole components in the region of 2hω excitations, and first investigations of the continuum background which can yield information about excitation mechanism and average multipolarity
