Display of rotational levels near the fission threshold in 232Th(n,f) reaction

Description

The 232Th(n,f) cross section has been measured relative to that of 235U up to 5MeV, with a neutron energy resolution of 3keV at 1.6MeV. The angular anisotropy of fission fragments has also been measured in the same energy range with an energy resolution of 6keV at 1,6MeV. The broad vibrational levels located above 1MeV are resolved into sharp structures which are interpreted as rotational states. The rotational constants h2/2J of highly deformed 233Th are found to be 2.45 and 2.65keV at 1.5 and 1.6MeV respectively. These results are interpreted by the possibility of a third minimum in the fission barrier

Abstract (French)

La section efficace de fission du 232Th a ete mesuree par rapport a celle de 235U jusqu'a 5MeV. La resolution en energie etait de 3keV a 1,6MeV. L'anisotropie angulaire des fragments de fission a egalement ete mesuree dans la meme gamme d'energie, mais avec une resolution de 6keV a 1,6MeV. Les resonances de vibration situees au-dessus de 1MeV ont ete resolues en structure fines mettant ainsi en evidence des bandes de rotation. Les courants h2/2J de deux bandes de rotations situees a 1,5 et 1,6MeV sont respectivement egales a 2.45 et 2.65keV. Ces resultats sont interpretes par la possibilite d'un troisieme minimum dans la barriere de fission du noyau compose 233Th
