Detailed calculations of statistical and valence effects in resonance neutron capture in the 3s region are compared with the observed s- and p-wave average radiative widths and variances. Valence capture is strongest in 54Fe, while evidence in support of a doorway component is found for 40Ca, 45Sc, 56Fe and 57Fe. A great deal of experimental information is now available on the magnitudes and variances of the s- and p-wave radiative widths in the 3s region. In this paper detailed statistical and valence estimates are compared with the data, and the relative roles of statistical (S), valence (V) and doorway (D) capture mechanisms are elucidated. Results of calculations (described in the preceding paper) for a range of nuclides in the 3s region are given in Table 1. In the main, these results are sensitive to the assumed values of the #betta#-ray energy dependence (E3/sub #betta#/) and the ratio GAMMA/sub #betta#/(El)/GAMMA/sub #betta#/(Ml) = 7. Exceptions are 40Ca, 45Sc and 46Ti where low lying states of mixed parity occur, and the ratio of s- and p-wave radiative widths calculated on the statistical model (R/sup S/) is close to unity
