Nuclear fuel cycle activities at IGCAR: an overview
Description
The Indian fast reactor reprocessing program is strategically conceived. A pilot plant CORAL (COmpact Reprocessing of Advanced-fuels in Lead-cells) was constructed and commissioned in 2003 and is operating successfully. The demonstration plant DFRP (Demonstration fast reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant) has been designed and constructed and is in advanced stage of commissioning. The construction of FRP (Fuel Reprocessing Plant) of FRFCF (Fast Reactor Fuel Cycle Facility) will be for commercial scale reprocessing of spent fuel from Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR). In the long-term, the Indian Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) programme will have to be based on metal fuel to achieve enhanced breeding and better fuel utilisation for faster growth of nuclear power. A structured R and D programme on metal fuel cycle for fuel fabrication and reprocessing is currently underway. This paper gives an overview of fast reactor fuel cycle activities at IGCAR
