A case of bilateral echinococcosis of the lungs and a literature review

The localization of pulmonary hydatid cysts can be bilateral or combined with other organs, most commonly the liver. Clinical symptoms may be absent or occur with cyst growth or complications. Conventional radiography and computed tomography are essential for diagnosis. We present a case of a 59-year-old man with complaints of hemoptysis. Two years earlier, due to a viral infection and subsequent radiography and CT, bilateral cystic lesions were detected in another hospital, and serological tests for echinococcosis were performed, which were negative. The patient was admitted to our institution and a cystotomy, removal of a hydatid cyst after needle aspiration and partial pericystectomy without capitonnage on the right side was performed. In the second stage, a cystotomy, removal of the hydatid cyst after preliminary needle aspiration and capitonnage on the left side was performed. (author)
