An international perspective on the future of power generation and transmission

This paper reports that as a result of the Second World War and the separation of Germany, the western and eastern electricity systems in my country have developed independently from each other. The centralized planned economy in the East on the one hand, and the diversified market economy structure in the West on the other hand, led to enormous differences in the operational strategy and the technical facilities of the electricity industry. The incredibly fast political reunification in 1990 has not yet changed any of these differences; they are still there. Following the political and social reunification of both parts of Germany, the German electricity industry is now working hard to also reunite the electricity supply systems, to harmonize their operational principles, and to standardize the technical equipment
