Description
The aim of the European fast reactor (EFR ) project is to design and build a fast reactor that will have the capability to be competitive with thermal reactors operating in Europe and that will be licensable in any of the participating countries. The program formally began in March 1988. The European utilities associated in the EFR Utilities Group (EFRUG) drafted a technical specification for EFR according to which the design work is now proceeding. The engineering companies combined as EFR Associates have defined the necessary research and development (R ampersand D) in support of the project, which is performed in a dozen nuclear centers in three countries. The participating R ampersand D organizations are the French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique, the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority, and Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe and Siemens AG in Germany
