Radiation-induced generation of dislocation loops by second phase inclusions

Description
A mechanism permitting to explain radiation-induced generation of dislocation loops in a solid containing second phase inclusions is suggested. A great amount of radiation-induced point defects - vacancies and interstitial atoms - that further either annihilate or are absorbed by the sinks is brought out. Inclusion-matrix interface is a sink of point defects. Absorbing excess vacancies inclusions generate the vacancy loops. As a result total volume is decreased as much as increased in absorption of interstitial atoms by dislocations. By this fact the swelling rate is reduced to zero. With regard to the suggested mechanism it is possible to design high-density inclusion materials not susceptible to swelling
