Model of AM Canum Venaticorum

Description
The spectrograms of AM C Vn (HZ 29) obtained in 1978-1980 have been processed. It is shown that the wavelengths and intensities of helium absorption lines vary at a timescale much longer than the photometric period (17.5 min). The new model of the system is suggested: two similar DB white dwarfs, one of which has a strong magnetic field B>106 G. It is shown that the period of 17.5 min is the period of axial rotation of the magnetized white dwarf. The accretion rate is approximately 1016 g/s and it is probably variable. The energy distribution in the continuum is non-thermal, and from the absorption spectrum, Tsub(eff) of white dwarfs belonging to the system is approximately 2x104 K. The main observational features of AM C Vn are explained in the frameworks of the suggested new model
