Temperature measurements in a glow discharge from the rotational spectra of excited N2 molecules

Description
The rotational structure of the molecular electronic vibrational bands of N+2 (B) -> N+2 (X) and N2 (C) -> N2 (B) are used for the determination Of the neutral gas temperature in a pure nitrogen glow discharge. The results show a non-Boltzman distribution especially for low temperatures. We show that depending on the discharge conditions, the excitation process must be considered in order to obtain the gas temperature from the N+2 (B) and N2 (C) rotational distributions. (author)

A estrutura rotational de bandas moleculares do nitrogenio correspondente as transicoes eletronicas N+2 (B) -> N2 (X) e N2 (C) -> N2 (B) e usada para a determinacao da temperatura do gas numa descarga de nitrogenio puro. Os resultados mostram uma distribuicao nao-Boltzman especialmente para baixas temperaturas. E demonstrado que dependendo das condicoes, os processos de exitacao devem ser considerados afim de determinar a temperatura do gas a partir das distribuicoes rotacionais do N+2 (B) e N2 (C).
