Neutron source for reactor
Description
Purpose: To prevent heavy particles, particularly alpha-particles, emitted from a beryllium cylinder of neutron source devise from directly colliding a holder outer or inner tube by providing the beryllium cylinder with metal liners. Constitution: Gamma-rays radiated from a gamma-ray source provided within a neutron source holder collide a beryllium cylinder within the holder to produce neutrons by the (γ, n) reaction. At the same time, a great quantity of helium and alpha-particles is produced due to neutrons present within the reactor, and some of alpha-particles are emitted to the holder outer or inner tube. However, since metal liners are provided between the beryllium cylinder on one hand and inner and outer tubes on the other hand, alpha-particles are absorbed by the metal liners, so that there is no possibility of causing radioactive damage to the outer or inner tube.
