Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome

Description

Computed tomography is more sensitive and more accurate than plain roentgenography in patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging can be useful at some sites where the diagnosis is difficult, such as the hip. Abnormalities consist of regional bone marrow edema and, in some instances, a subchondral linear area of hypointense signal on T1 and T2 images. Magnetic resonance imaging rules out avascular osteonecrosis and sometimes discloses a stress fracture within the affected area. (authors). 20 refs., 8 figs
