Vivitron: progress report 1986

The construction of the VIVITRON, an electrostatic tandem accelerator of 35 MV has started in February 1986. The different steps in the evolution of the project are illustrated by the figures included in the present report: tests of a VIV section and of the insulators in the CN accelerator, computer assisted conception of the mechanical structure, construction of the VIV building and tank installation. During 1986, development work has been performed on the VIV post spacers, on the composite material used in the column structure, on the belt charging system and on specific items connected with the VIV beam: injector and charge state selector. The VIV group has the chance to receive advice from a Technical Committee composed of accelerator experts from french Laboratories and also from Daresbury , Heidelberg and Muenich. The committee meets three times per year and we have included in the report the minutes of the 1986 meetings. They contain all the information concerning the budget and the schedule of the project. It is expected that after completion of the building and the tank, the mounting of the VIV generator will start in June 1987
