Chiral symmetry breaking and quark masses

Description
It is shown that knowledge of current and constituent quark masses is important for evaluating meson-nucleon σ-terms. Estimates for these terms are obtained in the generalized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and by using the expansion of the isosymmetric πN amplitude near the threshold in the Breit frame. The problem of s-wave pion condensation in nuclear matter and its relation to the pion-nucleon σ-term are considered. 33 refs., 1 tab
