Radiation effect on aqueous solutions of pH-azo indicators

Description

Radiative chemical transformations of azo incidators in aqueous solutions in the presence of various additions under 60Co gamma irradiation are studied. The indicator decoloration is shown to proceed most effectively in acid solutions rather than in neutral or alkaline ones. The presence of alcohols in a solution leads to a sharp drop in radioresistance of azo indicators mainly as a result of dye recovery by α-alcoholic radicals. To enhance the radioresistance it is necessary to use additions competing with an azo dye for interaction with the water radiolysis products - esub(aq)sup(-) and H+
