Description
This popular article reviews the situation at Three Mile Island one year after the accident. By now, the iodine-131 has decayed, but radioactive krypton with a half life of 10.7 years is still present in abundant quantities. Controlled releases over a 49-day period have been considered but potentially unfavourable public reaction has prevented approval of the releases. Other possibilities are discussed to solve the krypton problem along with the recommendations of the commissions. The article notes that changes in operating standards for nuclear generating stations in the United States have already started appearing as a result of Three Mile Island. (TI)
