Serendipitous discovery of a redshift 4.4 QSO

Description
The serendipitous discovery of an extremely high-redshifted QSO during long-slit observations of an unrelated object is reported. The QSO spectrum contains strong emission lines of Ly-alpha, NV 1240 A, and C IV 1549 A, as well as weaker Ly-beta, O VI, 1034 A, Si II 1262 A, and semiforbidden Si IV/O IV 1400 A. There is a prominent break in the continuum level blueward of Ly-alpha. The derived redshift is 4.406 + or - 0.005, one of the highest known. 22 references
