Description
In the experiments reported here, the repair of SS DNA lesions in PHIX174 produced by treatment with hydroxylamine (HA) or by UV-irradiation, and the concomitant requirement of protein synthesis, were tested on the same phage-host system under similar experimental conditions. Our results show (a) the need of the recA+ gene functions of the host cells for reactivation, (b) that recA+ and the uvrA+ gene functions both act in this process, and (c) that the recA+ uvrA+ cells (E. coli C) are capable of reactivating HA-damaged phage.
