Radioactive standards and how they are applied in nuclear engineering and environmental monitoring

Description

The methods of radioactivity measurement, preparation of reference sources and detector calibration, as carried out within the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), are presented together with a survey of the practical use of the radioactive standards elaborated by this institute. The experience gained in practical environmental monitoring, as for instance in the monitoring of reactor operating status or reactor effluents, is explained in great detail, along with the problems encountered so far. In many cases, it is the task of appliers of the radioactive standards made available by PTB to make their own calibration sources. This presents no problem with gamma emitters, whereas in the case of beta or alpha emitters further work in cooperation with PTB needs to be done. (DG)

Abstract (German)

Die Verfahren der Aktivitaetsbestimmung, Praeparateherstellung und Detektorkalibrierung in der PTB werden vorgestellt und der praktische Einsatz der Standards beschrieben, insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit Ueberwachungsaufgaben des Betriebszustands, des Abwassers und der Abluft von Reaktoren. Die radioaktiven Standards der PTB bilden hierzu die Basis. Allerdings muss der Anwender in vielen Faellen aus bereitgestellten Standardloesungen geeignete Kalibrierpraeparate selbst herstellen. Bei Gammastrahlern gibt es hierbei, im Gegensatz zu Beta- u. Alphastrahlern, keine Schwierigkeiten. (DG)
