Effect of mobility of small clusters on radiation strengthening of copper

Description
Small interstitial and vacancy clusters have a mobility comparable to that of single defects. If n is the highest number of interstitials in a mobile cluster then an immobile cluster of n+1 defects transforms into a mobile one when it absorbs a vacancy. A similar process is valid for vacancy clusters as well. Contributions of these processes to the source and sink terms in the rate equations are given. The saturation of cluster concentrations during irradiation is discussed. Reasonable agreement is found with the experimental results on radiation strengthening under high-energy heavy-ion irradiation in copper. ((orig.))
