A contribution to the optical method of determination of the orientation of cubic crystals

Description

In research of the physical properties of the crystals, it is often necessary to use single crystals and determine the crystallographic orientation of their planes and directions. In most cases, this problem is solved by the method of Laue X-ray diffraction and analysis of the resultant X-ray diffraction patterns (Lauegrams) in order to construct the stereo graphic projection of the planes of directions of the crystal in its specific position. Another, less extensively used method is the method based on the utilisation of the reflection of light on the known crystallographic planes on a suitably etched surface of the single crystals. An advantage of this method is the lower apparatus and time requirement for containing suitable results: instead of X-ray apparatus, it is sufficient to use and optical bench with a light source, a double goniometric holder with a screen, instead of several hours of exposure of the Lauegram and its subsequent photographic processing , it is sufficient, to obtain the required experimental data, to etch the polished surface and measure the angles of reflection of a light on the optical bench over a period of several minutes. These advantages become evident especially in the case of orientation of a larger number of the specimens
