The Computer Interfacing Dosemeter Reader (CID) is an example of the use of special electronics and computer system technology to automate some of the functions of human vision. This system and its image processing techniques are applied to the reading of direct reading dosemeters. The result is a reliable, consistent method of data capture for the nuclear power industry. Generalization of this technique can lead to a new family of specialized robotics instrumentation for remote sensing in the nuclear industry. The visual analysis of existing instrument displays will allow remote monitoring of continuous readouts for alarm levels by a non-fatiguing observer. Human backup for action decision will be possible with an increased degree of personnel safety. Rapid identification and reporting of changes in designated readings will allow fast response to changing conditions and can reduce the number of survey trips into controlled access areas. A significant advantage of this approach to automatic monitoring is that existing instrumentation can be used even if digital output is not available. Surveillance cameras or remotely controlled mobile units can be used to examine direct reading instruments in their original context without alterations to the facility
