Superstrings
Description
String theories are promising candidates for perturbatively finite quantum theories of gravity. Mathematical consistency appears to require a supersymmetric theory in ten dimensions with gauge group E/sub 8/xE/sub 8/ or SO(32). The E/sub 8/xE/sub 8/ theory may be capable, after spontaneous compactification of six dimensions, of producing realistic low-energy physics. Superstring theory is developing very rapidly in the last year, but it will probably take a long time to make a convincing case that this is the route that nature has chosen
