Radionuclide mobility in natural porous media: a contribution to reactive transport

Description

The study of radionuclide mobility in natural porous media includes the modeling of reactive transport, which has been the common thread running through my research and development activities at the Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives since 2003. This manuscript describes my research approach and my scientific contributions in this field. By means of an experimental approach, this manuscript retraces my activities concerning the choice and validation of transport equations in saturated and unsaturated porous media (chapter 0), including the development of the BEETI device; the consideration of the chemical reactivity of radionuclides in natural porous media, specifically their adsorption process on clay minerals, with a critique of the associated modeling (chapter 3); modelling the transport coupled with the chemical reactivity of trace elements (chapter 4) applied to soils and sedimentary rock. A fourth section (chapter 5) highlights the implications of soil physico-chemical characteristics for simulating the behavior of radioelements in post-accident situations, and for the development of remediation processes such as particle flotation and phyto-remediation. Finally, Chapter 6 gives a succinct presentation of the work in progress and the prospects opened up by our reflections on the data and model gaps identified, with the direction envisaged for the coming years and new fields of application. Abstract (French)

L'etude de la mobilite de radionucleides dans les milieux poreux naturels inclut la modelisation du transport reactif, fil conducteur de mes activites de recherche et developpement que j'ai menees au Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives depuis 2003. Ce manuscrit reprend alors la demarche de recherche menee et mes apports scientifiques sur cette thematique. Par le biais d'une demarche experimentale, ce manuscrit retrace mes activites portant sur le choix et la validation des equations de transport en milieu poreux sature et insature (chapitre 0) comprenant le developpement du dispositif BEETI; la prise en compte de la reactivite chimique des radionucleides dans les milieux poreux naturels, specifiquement leur processus d'adsorption sur les mineraux argileux avec une critique de la modelisation associee (chapitre 3); la modelisation du transport couple a la reactivite chimique d'elements traces (chapitre 4) appliquee a des sols et une roche sedimentaire. Un quatrieme volet (chapitre 5) vise a mettre en exergue l'implication des caracteristiques physico-chimiques des sols sur la simulation du comportement des radioelements en situation post-accidentelle et pour le developpement de procedes de remediation tels que la flottation particulaire et la phyto-remediation. Finalement, le chapitre 6 donne une presentation succincte des travaux en cours et des perspectives ouvertes par notre reflexion sur les lacunes identifiees en matiere de donnees et de modeles, avec l'orientation envisagee dans les prochaines annees et de nouveaux domaines d'application
