Description

A project is in progress to develop Severe Accident Management Guidance for VVER-1000 nuclear power plants. This work is being carried out within the framework of projects of the United States and Russian Federation International Nuclear Safety Centers. One of the projects is a joint project of the International Nuclear Safety Center of Russian Minatom (RMINSC) and the U.S. International Nuclear Safety Center (USINSC) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) planned for the period up to April of 2003. The milestones of the projects are described. Major working phases include the following: preparation of a report with description of the technical background for severe accident management, widening of the database for the Balakovo NPP, Unit 4 which is used as a reference unit, evaluation of possible NPP modifications for accident mitigation, assessment of NPP instrumentation under severe accident conditions, computer code analyses to check and confirm selected strategies for severe accident management, and Severe Accident Management Guidance development.
