Nuclear orientation study of the decay of 177Lu/supm/

Angular distributions of 37 γ rays were observed following the decays of 161-day ¹⁷⁷Lu^m and 6.8-day ¹⁷⁷Lu^g polarized at low temperatures in the ferromagnetic cubic Laves-phase compound ZrFe₂. The magnetic moment of the ¹⁷⁷Lu^m was deduced to be |μ|=(2.74±.21)μ_N, in excellent agreement with the value μ=+2.59μ_N computed assuming the ¹⁷⁷Lu^m to be the three-quasiparticle state 7/2⁺[404]_p,9/2⁺[624]_n,7/2⁻[514]_n. The magnetic hyperfine fields of Lu, Ta, Sc, and Co in ZrFe₂ were deduced from the corresponding γ-ray anisotropies. Decays proceeding through the 1.1-sec ¹⁷⁷Hf^m were observed to show characteristic relaxation times of T₁≈6.7 sec. The E2/M1 mixing ratios of numerous intraband transitions in ¹⁷⁷Lu and ¹⁷⁷Hf were deduced, and the corresponding (g_K-g_R)/Q₀ values were computed. Several interband M2/E1 mixing ratios were deduced and were compared with calculations based on the Nilsson model including first-order Coriolis mixing. The 0-180° asymmetries of several ¹⁷⁷Lu transitions were observed in an effort to see if parity mixing effects might be present due to the particularly close-lying opposite parity states of ¹⁷⁷Lu; no effects were seen to the limit of 2 × 10⁻⁴.RADIOACTIVITY ¹⁷⁷Lu^m, ¹⁷⁷Lu^g; measured γ(θ) from polarized nuclei; deduced magnetic moment μ, hyperfine field H of impurities in ZrFe₂, relaxation time, γ-ray multipole mixing ratios, δ(E2/M1), δ(M2/E1), g_K, g_R, Coriolis mixing; deduced no observable parity violation.
