Control rod assemblies

Description

Purpose: To ensure reliable detection for the control rod failures in control rod assemblies for use with LMFBR type reactors after mounting the rods into the reactor. Constitution: In control rod assemblies using sealed tube type control rod elements, neutron absorbers are charged about at the middle of the control rod element. Gas plenums are provided above and below the neutron absorbers for preventing the inner pressure in the control rod elements from rising due to gases generated from the neutron absorbers. A gas-encapsulated capsule for detecting the failure of the control rod elements is disposed in each of the gas plenums. The detection gases encapsulated in the capsule by sealing metals are released into the control rod elements when the sealing metals are fused by the temperature increase at the start of the operation of the reactor. Since detection gas sources are provided in the upper and the lower gas plenums, reliable detection can be ensured. (Ikeda, J.)
