The ultrasonic inspection of austenitic welds

  • 1. NDT Applications centre, CEGB, Scientific Services Dept., Manchester (United Kingdom)

Description

After a comment of the various aspects and requirements of ultrasonic inspection of austenitic 316 stainless steel welds, and having recalled some results of previous studies on the microstructure of such welds and its relationship with ultrasonic attenuation and with the welding procedure, the author describes the extent to which these results have enabled the attenuation in the welds to be controlled, and the effects of the residual attenuation on the development of an ultrasonic inspection procedure
