Radiation response of optical fibers and photodiode components with a view to nuclear data links

Description

The effect of cobalt-60 gamma rays on optical fibers and optical components has been studied by CEA and THOMSON-CSF Co. A specific gamma facility was designed for fibers to use as nuclear data links. The gamma-ray exposure rate is from 200 R/h to 2000000 R/h. The volume of the irradiation chamber is 0.04 cubic meter. The device was built for continuous or discontinuous measurements. Optical power is followed for glass fiber, silica fiber (with either Ge-doped SiO2 core, or F-doped SiO2 cladding) and for polymer clad silica fiber. The PCS fiber is the most radiation resistant: 4 dB/km with dose 105rad, dose rate 2 x 104 rad/hour at wavelength of 850 nm ambient temperature. 80 commercial optical components LEDS's and PIN photodiodes are tested under gamma radiation. The radiation-induced optical losses are very small e.g.5 dB with 4 x 106 rads for standard PIN and 3.5 dB with rod-type, which includes a step index fiber

Abstract (French)

Dans le cadre d'un contrat CEA - THOMSPN-CSF, on a entrepris une etude de la tenue sous rayonnement gamma de fibres optiques et de composants optoelectroniques, en vue de la transmission de donnees en environnement nucleaire. Un irradiateur gamma de cobalt 60 a ete etudie et realise pour ces essais. Le debit d'exposition peut y etre ajuste de 200 R/h a 2000000 R/h. Le volume de la chambre d'irradiation est de 40 litres. L'appareil permet soit des mesures continues pendant l'irradiation, soit des mesures discontinues. Des mesures de puissance optique ont ete faites pour differents types de fibre: en verre, en silice (coeur dope Ge ou gaine dopee F), et en silice gainee silicone. La fibre ''gaine plastique-coeur silice'' est la plus resistance: attenuation 4 dB/km a 105 rads, avec debit de dose 2 x 104 rd/h, a 850 nm et temperature ambiante. 80 composants optoelectroniques, diodes electroluminescentes et photodiodes PIN, ont ete essayes sous rayonnement gamma. L'attenuation est faible, par ex. a 4 megarads 0,5 dB pour les diodes PIN ''a fenetre'' et 3,5 dB pour des diodes ''barreau'' (avec raccordement dans le connecteur par fibre a saut d'indice)
