Description
The effect of temperature on counting efficiency and background rate in low-level liquid scintillation counting of tritium and 14C are discussed. The results of experimental investigations of these parameters in the temperature range between -2 degC and +18 degC are presented. If emulsion counting of tritium is considered two regions of the counting efficiency/temperature relation can be distinguished: the region of the high and relatively constant value of this parameter (ranging from room temperature to about +3 degC) and the region of the strongly reduced signal. It is suggested that a reduction of light transmission from the sample to the photomultipliers induced by changes in optical properties of the emulsion may be responsible for the observed effect. Measurements of 14C-benzene samples in home-made teflon-copper vials do not reveal any significant variations of counting efficiency or background rate within the studied temperature range. (author)
