Neutron flux underground and production of radionuclides in geological formations
Description
The production of radionuclides in the rock formation is controlled by the neutron flux originated from nuclear reactions initiated by α-particles, cosmic muons and spontaneous fission of U and Th. The way of determination of neutron production in the rock is presented and some experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations. Further discussed is the possible underground production of radioisotopes used or proposed in ground water 'dating' (3H, 14C, 39Ar, 32Si, 36Cl, 81Kr, 129I). (author)
