Estimation of the natural production of radionuclides in geological formations from reactions with fast neutrons
Description
A method of estimating the natural production of radionuclides by reactions with fast neutrons in a rock formation is described. The neutron energy distribution in the rock is calculated using the multigroup approach to the neutron slowing down problem. The nuclear reaction rate leading to the production of a radionuclide is calculated by numerical integration. The production rate of 39Ar and 239Pu in various rocks has been estimated as an example of applying the method described. (author)
