[en] The Pilot library is targeted to novice scientific programmers within High Performance Computing. The CellPilot library extends the Pilot library to the Cell Broadband Engine processor and heterogeneous clusters. Using Pilot's process and channel abstractions, the CellPilot library can create a process on any of the processor types, both PPEs and SPEs, across the cluster. Communication is achieved by creating a channel between any two processes, and using the write/read channel functions in the participating processes. The CellPilot library uses MPI for the inter-node communication and the Cell SDK within a Cell node. All the architecture specific details of Cell communications are hidden from the user.
[en] Mechanical models of the wheel-soil interaction are constructed for a rigid wheel of lunar rover when rolling and steering, based on the theories of terramechanics and passive earth pressure. The mechanical affect of different parameters of the soil to the rigid wheel is analysed, such as drawbar pull, rolling torque and steering torque. Experimental results of a rigid wheel in a kind of dry soil, whose mechanical parameters are some similar to lunar soil, validate the models correct. A novel test-bed and its data acquisition system are also designed for testing the performance of the wheel-soil interaction of lunar rover, and their key technologies concerned are discussed
[en] The J-PARC E16 experiment was proposed to investigate the restoration of chiral symmetry at the normal nuclear density. E16 will systematically measure in-medium mass of vector mesons at J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility using a 30-GeV proton beam with an intensity of 2 x 10"1"0 protons per pulse. The E16 spectrometer was designed to detect e"+e"- from slowly moving vector meson, particularly the ϕ meson. The detector system consists of GEM tracker, Gas Cerenkov detector based on GEM and electromagnetic calorimeter made of lead-glass, whose number of channels reaches about 100,000 in total. The readout electronics, trigger system and data acquisition system for the detectors have been developed, for which level-1 trigger rate of 1-2 kHz is required under several 10 MHz interaction rate. The preparation is underway for the first beam time in 2017. (paper)
[en] This paper reports on the commissioning and first running experience of the CMS Zero Degree Calorimeters during December 2009. All channels worked correctly. The ZDCs were timed into the data acquisition system using beam splash events. These data also allowed us to make a first estimate of channel-by-channel variations in gain.
[en] DAQ-Middleware is a software framework for a network-distributed data acquisition (DAQ) system that is based on the Robot Technology Middleware (RTM). The framework consists of a DAQ-Component, that is implemented as a data transfer module, a data gather module, a data record module, etc., and a DAQ-Operator, that is implemented as a control module of other components. The basic functionalities, that are necessary as a DAQ system, such as transferring data, starting and stopping the system, etc., are already prepared in the framework. But one of control functionalities, i.e., the functionality of changing parameter values on the DAQ-Components, wasn't provided yet. In order to implement the functionality, the framework has to have the communication method to transfer data from the DAQ-Operator to the DAQ-Component, and the new state to realize the functionality because it should be separated from a normal state to acquire data. Then we developed and added the new functionality in the DAQ-Middleware to transfer data from DAQ-Operator to DAQ-Components in the new state. The new DAQ-Middleware framework allows us to implement easily not only functionality of acquiring data but also that of controlling component modules.
[en] The NOvA experiment uses a continuous, free-running, dead-timeless data acquisition system to collect data from the 14 kT far detector. The DAQ system readouts the more than 344,000 detector channels and assembles the information into an raw unfiltered high bandwidth data stream. The NOvA trigger systems operate in parallel to the readout and asynchronously to the primary DAQ readout/event building chain. The data driven triggering systems for NOvA are unique in that they examine long contiguous time windows of the high resolution readout data and enable the detector to be sensitive to a wide range of physics interactions from those with fast, nanosecond scale signals up to processes with long delayed coincidences between hits which occur at the tens of milliseconds time scale. The trigger system is able to achieve a true 100% live time for the detector, making it sensitive to both beam spill related and off-spill physics. (paper)
[en] This paper presents initial work on the development of a keypad incorporating sensors to enable the biometric identity validation of the person using the keypad. The technique reported here is covert and non-intrusive and in use, requires no additional actions on the part of the user. Test systems have been developed using commercially available keypads, modified with mass-produced force sensors to facilitate measurement of key-press dynamics. Measurements are accomplished using a DAQ module attached to a PC running custom software to extract the biometric data and perform the validation. The design of the test system and the results from initial trials are presented. For a system designed for a false rejection ratio of 0%, a false acceptance rate of around 15% can be achieved
[en] This paper presents the current data acquisition system (DAQ) of the COMPASS experiment at CERN and discusses development of a new DAQ. The aim of the new DAQ is to substitute software event building by structure composed of special FPGA cards that will do the event building. The software part of the new DAQ is robust multinode system with high emphasis on reliability. It is based on state machines and implemented in C++ with usage of the QT framework, the DIM library, and the IPBus technology. A prototype of the system has been developed and tested. The new DAQ software fulfills given requirements.
[en] The ATLAS data acquisition system consists of four different networks interconnecting up to 2000 processors using up to 200 edge switches and five multi-blade chassis devices. The architecture of the system has been described in  and its operational model in . Classical, SNMP-based, network monitoring provides statistics on aggregate traffic, but for performance monitoring and troubleshooting purposes there was an imperative need to identify and quantify single traffic flows. sFlow  is an industry standard based on statistical sampling which attempts to provide a solution to this. Due to the size of the ATLAS network, the collection and analysis of the sFlow data from all devices generates a data handling problem of its own. This paper describes how this problem is addressed by making it possible to collect and store data either centrally or distributed according to need. The methods used to present the results in a relevant fashion for system analysts are discussed and we explore the possibilities and limitations of this diagnostic tool, giving an example of its use in solving system problems that arise during the ATLAS data taking.
[en] Wireless sensor networks (WSN) offer an increasingly attractive method of data gathering in distributed system architectures and dynamic access via wireless connectivity. Wireless sensor networks have physical and resource limitations, this leads to increased complexity for application developers and often results in applications that are closely coupled with network protocols. In this paper, a data aggregation framework using SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) on wireless sensor networks is presented. The framework works as a middleware for aggregating data measured by a number of nodes within a network. The aim of the study is to assess the suitability of the protocol in such environments where resources are limited compared to traditional networks
