[en] Ontario Power Generation has a rich history of innovation. With a strong foundation in research and development, we have a reputation as world leaders in the safe and reliable generation of nuclear energy. The world is changing though, and the electrical sector is not immune. Improvements in alternative power generation and challenging pricing models are a clear indication that the nuclear industry must continue to evolve. I will discuss the importance of innovation in the current energy ecosystem and discuss the future of nuclear in Canada and the world. I will also touch on how thinking differently and acting with Innovation Velocity can play a part in shaping the future and have a global impact
[en] Countries in South East and Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia have enormous potential for renewable energy and energy saving. This potential remains largely untapped due to multiple political, financial, technical and social barriers. Energy transition could help solve pressing energy security and health issues, boost economic growth and contribute to democratization and peace building in the region. Some latest developments and best practices in the region are promising. Targeted support of German, EU and international stakeholders could help the countries in the region foster their transition process to green economies.

[en] A number of scientists and other professionals have pushed for nuclear energy, arguing it would help mitigate climate change. The scientists had gathered at the ICAPP 2019 congress in Juan-les-Pins, France, to sign a declaration. There were forty nuclear associations who demanded public investment in the nuclear sector as it has experienced almost stagnant public investment since 2000 (around $4 billion per year for nuclear research and development) and private players too have shown little interest. The scientists gave several reasons for the lack of enthusiasm among the private sector. These included mixed or negative political signals as well as electricity market designs that have had a negative impact on the business case for nuclear energy. They underlined new reactor technologies like small modular reactors, Gen IV reactors and new applications like desalination, district heating, process heat for industry and hydrogen production and emphasised on the need of resources for research and development. The meet also raised the issue of R and D infrastructure, which has become obsolete and needs to be renewed. The statement demanded doubling of public investment in nuclear-related R and D and innovation within the next five years, with a focus on innovative applications of advanced nuclear systems to enable the clean energy mix of the future.

It offers a variety of technical solutions which can be adapted to local needs, but it still lacks public support and even a well suited regulation. [en] Northern Friesland is a region on the Wadden Sea shores in Germany, on the border with Denmark. Since 1991 farmers and locals have partnered to buy and manage wind turbines themselves. They named their companies 'citizens wind parks'. In 2018, they represent 90% of the installed wind capacity in Friesland, i.e. around 2000 MW. This thesis is an inquiry with those who made this energy landscape. The 'inquiry' is here conceived as method stating that the solution emerges as the problem be-comes clearer. In doing so, the thesis scours from 1975, 40 years of experience with collectively developing and managing wind farms, an experience which suggests renewing our understanding of the relations between energy projects and climate change. Taken as an experience of dwelling the climate, these citizen wind landscapes are successively observed along their sensitive (relational intensities to the environment), practical (socio-technical processes of project set-ups) and political dimensions (collective structuring between citizens and administrations to solve a problem). The thesis proposes a pragmatist and ecologist reformulation (together with John Dewey, Daniel Cefai and Tim Ingold) of this experience as the collective making of climatic landscapes. The thesis also puts forward the concept of landscape assembly, as a form of landscape, in the political sense inspired by the ancient Landschaften (Kenneth Olwig), to describe a plastic figure, heterogeneous and situated, capable of conducting this experience and of giving an account of it. This last aspect is also discussed in terms of democratic opportunities (Joelle Zask) and relational responsibility (Joan Tronto) to question the ways of apprehending climate changes. (author)

Depuis 1991 des agriculteurs et des habitants se sont associes pour acheter et gerer eux-memes des eoliennes. Ils ont nomme leurs entreprises 'parcs eoliens citoyens'. Elles representent en 2018, 90% de la capacite eolienne installee en Frise, soit pres de 2000 MW. Cette these est une enquete avec ce, celles et ceux qui ont fabrique ce paysage energetique. L'enquete est prise comme methode pragmatiste qui veut que la solution emerge au fur et a mesure que le probleme se precise. Ce faisant, la these parcourt, depuis 1975, 40 annees de l'experience des parcs eoliens, qui propose une vision renouvelee des liens entre projets d'energie et changements climatiques. Ces paysages de l'eolien citoyen, penses comme une experience d'habiter le climat, sont tour a tour observes dans leurs dimensions sensible (intensites relationnelles a l'environnement), pratique (processus sociotechniques des montages de projet) et politique (structurations collectives entre citoyens et administrations pour resoudre un probleme). La these en propose une reformulation pragmatiste et ecologiste (John Dewey, Daniel Cefai et Tim Ingold) comme la fabrique collective des paysages climatiques. Dans cette voie, la these explore la notion d'assemblee paysagere, comme forme de paysage, au sens politique inspire des anciens Landschaften (Kenneth Olwig), pour decrire une figure capable de mener cette experience, dans ses ancrages, ses montees en echelle et ses ouvertures, et d'en rendre compte. [en] The main objective of this thesis is to define and study the hydrogen social acceptability process, as well as the challenges of the energy transition in territories. Two fields of study with a hydrogen mobility demonstration project were selected: Navibus H2 (Nantes) and HyWay (Lyon). For comparison, this thesis includes the results of a study completed upstream, on a third field, GRHYD (Dunkirk). Hydrogen is relatively unheralded by the general public, therefore the methodology for studying was built using various theoretical concepts. The survey was conducted by questionnaire and interviews. In Nantes, it was conducted upstream the demonstration, with users of a river shuttle, the actors of the district served by this shuttle and the project directors. In Lyon, it was conducted while the demonstration, with drivers of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and members of the metropolitan organisation. Statistical and textual analyses provided comparisons between the results, as well as one with those of the preliminary survey conducted in Dunkirk. Dealing with perceptions, representations, expectations and attitudes related to hydrogen, makes possible to study how they are shared between groups. It finally leads to think about how to consider a social acceptability study related to demonstration projects, as well as its advantages to engage an energy transition in territories. (author)
[fr]L'objectif principal de cette these de doctorat consiste a definir et etudier le processus de co-construction de l'acceptabilite sociale de l'hydrogene, ainsi que les enjeux qu'il represente pour la transition energetique dans les territoires. Pour cela, deux terrains d'etudes ont ete selectionnes, qui comprennent chacun un projet de demonstration de mobilite liee a l'hydrogene: Navibus H2 (Nantes) et HyWay (Lyon). A titre comparatif, les resultats d'une etude realisee en amont de la these sur un troisieme terrain, GRHYD (Communaute Urbaine de Dunkerque), ont egalement ete integres a cette these. La methodologie, faisant appel a divers concepts theoriques, a ete concue pour apprehender le fait que le sujet d'etude soit peu connu du grand public. Les enquetes ont ete realisees par questionnaire et par entretiens: a Nantes, en amont de la demonstration, aupres d'usagers d'une navette fluviale electrique et d'acteurs du quartier desservi par cette navette, et a Lyon, en cours de demonstration, aupres d'utilisateurs de vehicules electriques fonctionnant avec de l'hydrogene, ainsi qu'aupres de charges de mission et d'elus de la metropole. Les resultats sont ensuite analyses a partir d'analyses statistiques et textuelles, puis compares entre eux, ainsi qu'a ceux de l'enquete prealable realisee a Dunkerque. Il a pu ainsi etre mis en evidence un ensemble de representations, d'attentes ou d'attitudes liees a l'hydrogene et plus ou moins partagees entre les groupes etudies. Une reflexion est ensuite proposee sur la maniere d'envisager une etude d'acceptabilite sociale en lien avec des projets de demonstration, ainsi que les atouts que cela represente pour une transition energetique dans les territoires. [en] The study, carried out by the 'renewable energies' Pole of Competencies and Innovation (PCI) on behalf of the Cerema's PCI 'Politics and development of the mountain', aimed to identify what were the levers and brakes to develop renewable energies in mountain areas. In order not to be too general, but crossed with existing local concerns, this study also attempted to assess the development potential of renewable energies in the territory of the Serre-Poncon-Ubaye-Durance region, which includes 31 municipalities located in mountain areas and is the winner of the 'positive energy territories for green growth' call for projects

Cette etude a vise a identifier quels etaient les leviers et les freins pour developper les energies renouvelables en zone de montagne. Afin de ne pas etre trop generale, mais croisee avec des preoccupations locales existantes, cette etude s'est attachee egalement a evaluer le potentiel de developpement des energies renouvelables sur le territoire du Pays Serre-Poncon-Ubaye- Durance, compose de 31 communes situees en zone de montagne et laureat de l'appel a projet TEPCV (territoires a energie positive pour la croissance verte)
[en] Under the current macro-economic trends, the so far abundant support system for renewables (mainly in the form of feed-in-tariffs and quota systems) has been drastically modified. In many EU countries, companies are trying to find alternative ways to secure financing for their renewable energy projects. Therefore, new ways of attracting private capital for the realisation of green energy goals have to replace the old schemes. Some new forms of financing are coming together with the EU Cohesion Policy 2014-2020 (project guarantees, packaging of small project for micro-financing schemes at the regional level, preferential loan instead of subsidies etc.). Advanced financial structures are likely to play an increasingly important role in the allocation of risk and reward among different investor classes. The finance and investment gap needs to be filled by the private sector. The challenge is to identify the appropriate policy options and financial tools to attract and scale-up private investments. There are, however, already innovative and promising business and financial models to promote the deployment of RES in the EU. The aim of the EurObserv'ER case studies is to find such examples and describe them so as to put forward the best practices and the replicability of the future promising financing mechanisms. EurObserv'ER will aim at choosing only the most promising ones and try to describe them in order to promote replicability in other geographical areas. The selection criteria for the choice of case studies should ensure (i) diversity across regions and RES, (ii) diversity across finance instruments/mechanisms, (iii) success of approach and its potential to be replicated, (iv) and a wide range of the 'size' of actors/ investors and the resulting RES investments (capacity). The current selection also takes into account the fact that there were already some case studies published in 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. World Energy congress statements (official statement, the discussions of the future energy leader's programme, contribution of young French students and researchers, what works and does not work in energy efficiency policies in the world) and indicates its publications (the World Energy Trilemna, and World Energy Scenarios to 2050). The contributions of French speakers are then proposed on the following themes: vision and scenarios for the future, identifying business opportunities with resources and technologies, the energy trilemma or policy solutions to secure prosperity, and securing a sustainable energy future. Other contributions by company and government representatives are provided.
