[en] To test the different types of nuclear containment vessel bolts for cracks in the transition area of bolt head to shank and the shank and threaded part, the ultrasonic test heads were modelled, built up and tested with the aid of a program for the sounding field calculation. The proof of cracks was obtained via direct reflection or via an indirect proof. With all test heads, the proof for reflections corresponding to 3 mm deep grooves is possible over the whole test range. (orig.)
[de]Zur Pruefung der verschiedenen Typen von Kernbehaelterschrauben auf Anrisse im Uebergangsbereich Schraubenkopf zu Schaft sowie Schaft- und Gewindeteil wurden Ultraschallpruefkoepfe mit Hilfe eines Programmes zur Schallfeldberechnung modelliert, aufgebaut und erprobt. Der Nachweis von Anrissen erfolgt ueber direkte Reflexionen bzw. ueber indirekte Nachweise. Mit allen Pruefkoepfen ist der Nachweis fuer Reflektoren entsprechend Nuten mit 3 mm Tiefe im ganzen Pruefbereich moeglich. (orig.)
[en] The feasibility of using a modified ultrasonic test system was examined for nondestructive testing of spot welds on steel plate in the automobile industry, and showed that stick welds as well as cold welds could be detected. This method of testing is suitable for quality assurance of spot welds in series production line. (author)

[en] A gap between a molten material and a lower head vessel is formed in the LAVA experiment, a phase 1 study of SONATA-IV program. In this paper, the quantitative results of the gap measurement using an off-line ultrasonic pulse echo method by digital signal processing are presented. However, the gap measurement signal using an ordinary ultrasonic test would be lack of reliability due to the structural complexity of the specimen. The structural complexity may result from the external reason from the shape and the internal reason from the material characteristics. This paper aims at the development of an appropriate ultrasonic test method, by analyzing the problems from the internal characteristic reason. As the ultrasonic test is affected by internal structures and configurations of test materials, back-scattering, that is, time invariant noise is generated in large grain size materials. Due to the above reason, the received signal results in low signal to noise ratio. Split spectrum processing(SSP) technique is effective to suppress the grain noise in the multi-gap signals. As the result of experimental test, the signal to noise ratio was improved by applying the new SSP technique with multi-gap signal. In this test, the signal of the propagational direction and reflectional direction through solid-liquid-solid specimen was analyzed to understand the behavior of the reflectional signal in a multi-layered structure by filling the gap with water between the melt and the lower head vessel.
[en] Standard Test Block(STB) for UT(Ultrasonic Testing) is a block approved by authoritative for material, shape and quality. STB is used for characteristic tests, sensitivity calibration and control of the time base range of UT inspection devices. The material, size and chemical components of STB should be strictly controlled to meet the related standards such as ASTM and JIS because it has an effect upon sensitivity, resolution and reproductivity of UT. The STBs which are not approved are sometimes used because the qualified STBs are very expensive. So, the purpose of this study is to survey the characteristics, quality and usability of Non-Standardized Test Blocks. Non-Standardized Test Blocks did not meet the standard requirements in size or chemical components, and ultrasonic characteristics. Therefore if the Non-Standardized Test Blocks are used without being tested, it's likely to cause errors in detecting the location and measuring the size of the defects
[en] PRV is divided into pressure container and internal structures. They are required about ultrasonic inspection of its detection by light thermal phenomenon. So, I wrote the principles about ultrasonic inspection of RPV internal structures. Especially, I wrote briefly the inspection in Europe and Germany by CRDM, core baffle bolt, core barrel bolt, CRGT-support pin, and fuel alignment pin. Germany, France, Japan's guideline are heart of this technology.

[en] It is of interest to reliably measure the velocity of stress waves in concrete. At present, reliable measurement is not possible for dispersive and attenuating materials such as concrete when access to only one surface of the structure is available, such as in the case of pavement structures. In this paper, a new method for one-sided stress wave velocity determination in concrete is applied to investigate the effects of composition, age and moisture content. This method uses a controlled impact as a stress wave source and two sensitive receivers mounted on the same surface as the impact sites. The novel aspect of the technique is the data collection system which automatically determines the arrival of the generated longitudinal and surface wave arrivals. A conventional ultrasonic through transmission method is used to compare with the results determined by the one-sided method.
