[en] Two statistical ultrasonic techniques were developed to aid in the selection of ultrasonically more readily inspectable cladded stainless steel components and to increase the reliability of detecting surface-breaking cracks in operating cladded piping systems. A method based on the satellite-pulse technique permits the quantification of variations in the shear-wave-velocity profile across clad-base material and weld-base material interfaces. To increase the reliability of crack detection through the introduction of redundancy into the ultrasonic inspection systems, one of the angle beam probes in a two-element nonplanar array transmits into the test material a non evanescent longitudinal wave in addition to the usual shear wave. [en] In the petroleum industry, many pressure vessels with stainless steel overlay are in service and small cracks are often found on the surface of the overlay after some years of service. In the past few years, a method of accurately measuring the crack depth of coarse grain stainless steel overlay has been sought because it ts impractical to obtain the depth of these cracks by ultrasonic testing. The present paper describes the ultrasonic technique (using a longitudinal twin crystal probe with a refraction of 45 degrees) which permits to measure the depth of cracks in austenitic stainless steel overlay from the overlay side
[en] On the basis of the detailed requirements of the German Reactor Safety Commission an inspection concept and equipment has been developed and applied at up to now seven pre-service and three inservice inspections. [en] Within the context of the discussion about the many different methods of defect dimensioning in case of ultrasonically detected flaws, the authors make a distinction between flaw detection system which optimized for a high probability of detection, and systems for interpreting indications. Acoustic holography and the use of focused probes are considered as the most promising techniques for interpretation. The authors describe the typical limitations arising from the fact that most defects reflect like a mirror. [en] Sodium aerosols have the unpleasant characteristic that they deposit at places with low temperature level. This effect can be utilized when sodium aerosols are to be trapped at places which are determined beforehand. Thus vapour traps were developed which can filter sodium vapour from the cover gas. By this means the necessity was eliminated to heat all gas lines and gas systems with trace heaters just as all sodium lines are heated. It was of special interest for the INTERATOM to develop vapour traps which must not be changed or cleaned after a certain limited operating period. The vapour traps were supposed to enable maintenance free operation, i.e. they were to operate 'self cleaning'
[en] One of the most important problems that are met at the laboratories producing and handling radioisotopes is that of designing, building and operating enclosures suitable for the safe handling of active substances. With this purpose in mind, an enclosure has been designed and built for handling moderately high activities under a shielding made of 150 mm thick lead. In this report a description is given of those aspects that may be of interest to people working in this field. (Author)
