Decommissioning challenges: an industrial reality?2008
AbstractAbstract
[en] Decommissioning of nuclear heritage objects is the complex of complicated and interrelated legal, scientific and engineering solutions directed to substantiation and ensuring of safety during and after completing the preservation of large-scale nuclear and/or radiation hazardous sources. One of the main problems is that the solutions are often unique, unobvious in advance and, consequently, cause active and not always fruitful discussions concerning their adequacy. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The purpose of this document is to share the experience gained from the decommissioning and redevelopment of redundant Necsa buildings in order to assist in the compilation of a holistic future redevelopment and reuse plan for the Necsa site. This document aims to ensure optimisation of decommissioning and redevelopment actions. This document also aims to facilitate timely and efficient completion of decommissioning projects in that it highlights alternatives for effective Redevelopment and Reuse (R and R) of buildings currently in a decommissioning phase. AbstractAbstract
[en] Since 1993, as French new SSBN Le Triomphant was to be commissioned, decommissioning and dismantling of the first French submarines class Le Redoutable has been scheduled. The DGA (MoD) asked DCNS, the shipyard in charge of submarines and nuclear reactors repair, to organize the dismantling operations. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] On 5 February 1998, the government decided, [on the basis of the law on the phasing-out of nuclear power], that Barsebaeck 1 should close in June 1998. An appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court meant that the closure was temporarily postponed. After the Supreme Administrative Court declared that the government's decision should stand, Barsebaeck 1 was closed permanently on 30 November 1999. Some important lessons learned from Barsebaeck NPP decommissioning project are discussed below. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] To face the future challenges in the nuclear industry as dismantling and decommissioning, the Advanced Decontamination Processes Laboratory (Laboratoire des Procedes Avances de Decontamination - LPAD) is developing new decontamination processes for the nuclear industry to protect workers and to reduce strongly the quantity of secondary wastes produced. First, two decontamination processes for liquid nuclear wastes are under studies: the coprecipitation process and the column process. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The EUREX (Enriched Uranium Extraction) reprocessing plant operated between 1970 and 1983, and was prepared for decommissioning in the following period. In 2004 a leak was detected originating from the plant Spent Fuel Pool (SFP). Described in this paper are the operations to facilitate and complete draining of the SFP within spring 2008, following the successful out of water loading of spent fuel that occurred in the first half of 2007. AbstractAbstract
[en] The research reactor WWR-M of the Institute for nuclear research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is one of the first research reactors built and commissioned in the former USSR. Reactor was commissioned in 1960 and represents a heterogeneous water-moderated research facility operating with thermal neutrons at a power of 10 MWt, giving a maximum neutron flux of 1.5x1014 ncm-2 s-1 at the core centre. Reactor has nine horizontal experimental channels, a thermal column, and 13 vertical isotope channels inside the beryllium reflector. It is possible to install 10-12 vertical channels in the core. AbstractAbstract
[en] After fabricating plutonium fuels for 40 years (Fast Breeder Reactor, MOX), commercial operations at the AREVA NC Cadarache plant ended in 2003 and post operation clean out of its production buildings and laboratory started. AREVA objective is to achieve IAEA level 2 cleanup of the process facilities and transfer them to their owner, the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). There are two main opposite dismantling scenarios: very limited cleanup to optimize man power, or intensive cleanup of the facilities to optimize the quantity of long lived level waste as much as possible. Economic and environmental considerations lead the choice between these two options. (author)
