[en] This paper provides the estimate of cancer mortality caused by high-level radiation exposure. The method to estimate it is life table method. Throughout this method, we can obtain the lifetime and age-conditional probability of developing or dying of cancer. Moreover we can see the loss of rest of life. We obtain the result that the excess cancer mortality risk is not so serious. (author)

[en] This paper describes the design and construction of new Performance Testing programme that was implemented in Canada in 2008. The Canadian Regulator (Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission - CNSC) had determined that their licensees, in addition to the existing In Vivo and In Vitro performance tests, needed to demonstrate their ability in interpreting bioassay results. The program is administered by the Canadian National Calibration Reference Centre for Bioassay and In Vivo Monitoring (NCRC). Currently the NCRC carries out the performance testing for the In Vitro and In Vivo. At time of writing, the first round has not been completed and the pass/fail criteria have not been determined. [en] Relocation is one of the long-term protective actions in case of nuclear emergency to mitigate the consequences of an accidental release of radionuclides. The strategy of relocation is characterized by its protective benefit, cost and the corresponding residual dose in planning. This paper describes the application of a probabilistic accident consequence assessment model to the calculation of these quantities and the planning of relocation. Calculations of the consequence have been made of a postulated accident with source terms derived from a generic level 2 PSA. The results provided the insights for the development optimum dose criteria for introducing and terminating relocation. (author)

[en] The German Meteorological Service (DWD) is charged with tasks of radiation protection by the Law of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (1955, 1998), the Precautionary Radiation Protection Act (1986) and the Radiation Protection Ordinance (2001). Since 1955 the DWD is responsible for the surveillance of radioactivity in the atmosphere realized by measuring the radioactivity as well as analyzing the meteorological situation. The present tasks of DWD in the frame of the German ''Integrated Measuring and Information System for the Monitoring of Radioactivity in the Environment'' are presented including the measuring programme, the network of measuring locations, the organisation of aircraft measurements, the simulation of trajectories and dispersion. Regular emergency exercises and the operational routines guarantee a continuous control of the organisation's quality. (author)

[en] From time immemorial humankind has been fascinated, even obsessed, by the stars and planets. In those early days of yesteryears any planetary phenomena had astrological and religious significance. At present day, the planets have become objects of exploration and possible habitation. Our next endeavor seems to focus on our neighboring planet: Mars. From an object of mythology, then curiosity, Mars had come closer to us with each passing decade and is quite possibly within reach. The technology is available, and the engineering designs are achievable; but it needs the determination and the will to harness our energies to get there. (author)

[en] The paper describes the basic results of the international project 'Enhancement of the Radiation Monitoring and Emergency Response System in the Murmansk region' implemented in 2005-2007 by the Energy Safety Analysis Centre of the IBRAE RAS. The Project was funded by the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership Support Fund - Nuclear Window. The Government of the Murmansk Region was the customer and beneficiary of this activity. The created system meets all actual international and domestic requirements and may be used as a prototype in similar projects. (author)

[en] The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) has the responsibility for protecting the health and safety of the citizens in the Commonwealth, and protection of the environment from hazardous material contaminants. This includes sources of radiation such as medical and non-medical radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, radioactive waste, and independent oversight for nuclear power plants within the state. This paper and meeting poster summarizes the regulations and guidance for dealing with radioactivity often detected in solid waste in Pennsylvania. (author)
